BIO
With a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Kutztown University, Pennsylvania artist Barbara Kacicek has exhibited in numerous museum and invitational exhibitions including 'Getting Real: 20th Century American Realism from the Philip Desind Collection' and most recently 'Contemporary Imaginings: the Howard A. and Judith Tullman Collection'. Her award-winning work is featured in North Light Books' 'How to Discover Your Personal Painting Style'.
Barbara’s chief influences are the Old and Modern Masters, the sky (clouds, stars, wind, phases of the moon), the quality and color of shifting light, walking, standing still, the creative pursuits of her husband and daughter, the poetry of singer-songwriters, day dreams, night dreams, the human figure, fruit, water, her hands.
From the Italian meaning 'the first time', alla prima painting, also known as premier coup or direct painting, is a method of completing a painting in a single sitting while the painting is still wet. The desired effects of the final painting are achieved in the first application of paint as opposed to the traditional technique of building up the image in layers of paint allowing drying time in between each layer with the final painting being achieved at the end. In the alla prima method, each stroke of paint is applied with the intention of letting it stand in the picture as part of the final statement. There is no retouching or over-painting after the first layer of paint has dried.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My small alla prima skies, landscapes and still-lifes are a reflection of my quiet, contemplative existence. Usually bathed in the light of the ‘magic hour’, my painted subjects are imbued with a sense of mystery, memory and poetry under thoughtful, careful observation. Surrounded by beauty, my intent is to capture fleeting moments of shifting light over clouds, over trees, over fruit, over drapery, over skin – each one a unique, rapturous meditation on form, light and color.
